I’ve been involved in martial arts for a long time. I kept running into what Demi Barbito calls the status quo of ritual, hierarchy, and stagnation -- what was essentially a minimization of individual effort in systems that were supposed to celebrate the individual. Somewhere along the line I lost track of why I enjoyed training – the fun and the challenge. It just wasn’t fun anymore. When I did get “back on track”, I didn’t like what I found. But I knew what I had to do. I wrote this letter to my old class, just before Lily, Alan and I founded Modern Combatives. I’m surprised how much of it is still true -- and how relevant… |

In the 1970's I began to act on an interest in martial arts. My motivation was pretty much the same as anyone else’s. It looked like a fun way to learn self-defense. Once I started training I had the same questions as anyone else. |
