[MMA,
Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes]
I checked out schools around the Bay Area and Modern Combatives
is one of the very best. It's the only school I've seen that genuinely
focuses on all aspects of fighting as parts of an integrated whole
- kickboxing, clinch fighting with elbows and knees, takedowns,
and ground fighting. The instructors have a broad range of experience
in martial arts and are emotionally mature. It's a great place to
train.
- Michael Glogowsky
Modern combatives is unique in the fact that it’s basically
a mixed martial art gym where you will see all types of martial
artists from the young ‘wanna’ be UFC types, to the
hobbyist, to the self defense types, to the older generation who
take martial arts for fitness. The training is great there because
you will always find someone of your level whatever it may be. Another
thing that sets MODCOM apart is the collaboration between different
classes into your own game. What I mean to say is that some schools
teach the Muay Thai, BJJ, and boxing as separate classes with different
teachers but MODCOM combines these classes seamlessly so they flow
together to add to your overall stand up, ground, and clinch game.

Modern Combatives - it's a great opportunity for the entire family.
After a year of another Martial Art our daughters 6 and 11, signed
up with Modern Combatives. They really wanted to show up for class.
It is a lot of fun and they learn a functional form of mixed martial
arts. This is a great program for children to learn self-control,
exercise, and to think of ways to avoid being a target. We love
the school so much our whole family signed up. My husband takes
various classes: mixed martial arts, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu that
he likes because it incorporates a lot of wrestling moves. I get
a chance to take classes with other women while my children are
in class, and I also participate in mixed martial arts. It's a great
program for incredible exercise and it's never boring. You'll want
to show up for class.

I began working out at ModCom in February of 2005. At that time,
I smoked a pack of cigarettes a day and needless to say, I was quite
out of shape. I didn’t have enough energy to last an entire
45 minute class. But Alan, Jude and Lily and Konrad were always
supportive. The other students were also very welcoming and never
judgmental about my ability (or lack thereof). I loved my cigarettes,
but I soon found that I loved ModCom even more. I’m writing
this 6 months later and I’m still a non-smoker, I currently
attend classes 4-5 times a week. My strength, stamina and lung capacity
have all vastly improved, and I still love the classes.

I’ve searched long and hard for a place to train that focuses
on the integration and application of concepts, not just isolation
and repetition. Like many studying and practicing MMA, I’ve
tried my hand at several different arts. While I enjoyed and found
strengths in each, I did not feel proficient enough to use my skills
on the street. After only a few lessons at Modern Combatives I had
tools that have easily translated to the street. Since I moonlight
as a bouncer this is essential and now after a short time, I’m
getting ready for MMA competitions. What I most enjoy about training
at Modern Combatives is the atmosphere. Whether you want/need to
train for competition, law enforcement, or personal wellness, or
if you want to train fast or slow you can. Folks are friendly, accommodating,
willing to help and teach. Come for the complete suite of boxing,
Mui Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and strength and conditioning training,
or just one. It’s up to YOU. No one at Modern Combatives will
limit YOUR abilities as an athlete. Take the Challenge.

I have taken four years of Tae Kwon Do and after trying to reconcile
traditional fighting stances and what you actually did in sparring,
I when in search of something more realistic. I then did kickboxing
for four years, which is great exercise and teaches you to move
around and not pull your punches. When I moved to the Bay Area I
spent a lot of time looking for something similar. Functional Combatives
is definitely very inclusive of useful techniques from different
styles. The instructors are great teachers. They will take time
with new people but also will teach new techniques and ones you
thought you knew. While full out sparring can be really scary, the
class starts with games to get comfortable with the techniques,
which are fun. Oddly, my previous kickboxing class was mostly women,
so working out with guys is also new and a learning experience.
Everybody in the class is a good sport so nobody is trying to kill
you. After all, kicking and punching are so satisfying after a long
day of work.

My name is Ocean Mottley. I am 30 years old, and I joined Modern
Combatives two years ago. When I joined I had some basic self-defense
training, but I had very little striking capabilities or experience
sparring. I did have some judo background, but I had very little
experience at ALIVE training. The greatest benefit of training at
Modern Combatives for me is the hands on training I get from experienced
teachers and the training methods, which demand that we work together
with resistance to train basic methods in application. This is where
the gym’s mantra “function not fantasy” comes
from. Training is always focused on application, and the resistance
is set at each individual’s level so that we can grow without
being overwhelmed. In the last year I have gotten to go to a few
beginner’s fights, and the training at Modern Combatives helped
prepare me well. Most of all I have gained a level of confidence
that has improved my outlook on my basic self-defense training.
The students are great, which makes training much easier. People
are friendly, but everybody is ready to get down to business. People
of many different ages and ethnicities are represented at the school,
and the number of female students continues to grow. This is a great
place to feel safe and to train hard.

[Women’s
MMA/Self Defense Class]
I highly recommend women take this course! I have never been in
a street fight. This course put me in the position and state of
mind to understand what it is to defend myself. The lectures and
physical exercise taught me how to fight to protect myself. It’s
amazing what a little technique can do & how much it can help!
I now have that and feel more confident.
- Elena Frueta
I would recommend women’s Self Defense to women of all ages
and abilities. The course has given me confidence and a greater
sense of awareness of surroundings. If attacked, I am sure he is
likely to turn into the victim.
- Lexie
The course was great – very useful, helpful techniques, good
practice, good amount of time per session. Lily does a good job
demonstrating techniques. I feel much better able to defend myself
and my family.

Lily is an absolutely amazing teacher. Look out for that choke hold!

[Baby
Dinos (1 _ years old ~ 3 _ years old)]
Our 3 year old son has been attending Modern Combatives for about
4 months now. Their ''Baby Dinos'' class meets on Saturday mornings
and Monday & Wednesday evenings. Their philosophy is ''Fun not
Fear'' which is nice. They basically play for a half hour while
learning basics like balance, wrestling safely, kicking, punching,
and they even meditate at the end (sit, close their eyes and count
to ten slowly, then bow and say Thank You). Our son absolutely loves
it there. We actually live in Walnut Creek but make the drive because
we like it so much. Right now, there are about 5 boys and girls
in the class. Lily and Alan (husband and wife) are the instructors
and I cannot say enough good things about them. They are 100% on
the kids level and have unlimited patience. I would strongly recommend.
- ModCom Mom
Modern Combatives in Berkeley is wonderful. They are located on
University Ave. They teach preschool martial arts through play.
The instructor, Lily, is amazing with the children. Aside from being
a black belt, she is also a family counselor. Our son has been attending
for about 5 months now and we love it.
- Jennifer
"When I became a father one of the first things I thought of
for my son was to try to find a way to get him involved in athletics
as early as possible. Throughout my life I had dabbled in a few
different martial arts, and I have never been happier than when
I was training steadily, and I wanted to give my son that same opportunity.
I started right away looking at schools, but every one I looked
at either had a curriculum that emphasized yelling orders at the
kids and regimenting their behavior, or didn't take kids until age
5. The yelling approach I think is not appropriate for kids so young,
and since kids learn the most from before age 5, it seemed wrong
to waste that time.
So, I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I was when
I discovered the Modern Combatives Baby Dino class. Not only do
they take kids under 5 (the class is for 18 months to 4 yrs), but
they emphasize learning through play, and do not try to force very
young children to do repetitious or regimented exercises. What they
teach are real self defense skills - how to really protect yourself
from attack and escape an aggressor - not just the block punch you
see at other schools. The kids learn to sprawl like wrestlers, cover
up and bob and weave like boxers, and cling tight like JiuJitsu
fighters, and stand up, break away and escape safely. These are
real, effective skills that can be used when they are needed. And,
all the time they are learning balance, coordination and self discipline.
After one tryout class I signed my 3 year old up for a year, and
now after a few months I know I will keep him there as long as we
live in the East Bay. This is the best self defense school for kids
I have ever seen - and I have seen a lot.
-Tom Ocampo"
[Dinos/Team
Raptors (4 _ years old ~ 13 _ years old)]
I like Modern Combatives because it makes me feel safer when I walk
around. Also it is a good exercise and a good way to be with people.
When you are there you can make good friends, too. It is also nice
the way there are so many classes so you can choose what you want
to do. Alan and Lily (the instructors) are nice and when you are
stuck with something, they don't just say "do this and do that."
They talk you through it and show you how. They also make it easy
for the class to work with new people and the people who have been
there a long time, so they can all train together and have fun.
They make it fun and put games in the classes so you can learn by
playing games. It is also a good mix of things. It is not like you
only learn one thing. You get to do boxing, wrestling, Judo and
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
- Caitlin, age 10
Modern Combatives is a great way to get exercise and learn skills
for defending yourself if you get put in a dangerous situation.
The kid's classes help young kids learn basic defensive skills,
and the teen classes teach older kids more advanced things. The
baby/todler classes are great for small children to learn how to
interact with each other, as well as learn some very simple skills.
I think all of the classes are great ways for kids to learn about
working together, defending themselves, get in good shape, and most
of all, have a lot of fun.
