My path to mixed martial arts started with the gentle art of Tai
Chi, believe it or not. A knee injury in my mid 40's prompted me
to take up Tai Chi as a way to rehabilitate my knee and as my form
of exercise in general. Well, Tai Chi soon led me to aiki-jujutsu
and aiki-jujutsu led me to judo. I met Lily in a judo class and
that led me to joining the mixed martial arts group that Alan and
Lily had formed. We met in an abandoned building in Berkeley. It's
almost unbelievable now how that small group has grown and still
growing today but not really. The same qualities that Alan, Lily
and Jude instilled in that group - friendliness, fun workouts and
respect for truth in the martial arts - are still the qualities
that attract like minded people to join. I feel so lucky to be here
that I'm almost grateful I injured my knee that many years ago.
