The Gym
How did our group come together as Modern Combatives
– Mixed Martial Arts? It began with each of
us, on our own, in various gyms and dojos, training in martial arts
and combative sports: Judo, Boxing, Wing Chun, JKD, Muay Thai. What
we all had in common was we wanted a fun place to train where we
could do it all: stand up striking, clinch hitting and takedowns,
and ground fighting.

We came together slowly, in an abandoned indoor basketball
court with no sifus, no titles and no plans -- just training and
having fun. Those were and remain our primary goals. What has changed
is now we have better coaching in putting our 3 games together.
That coaching comes from Straight Blast Gym International.
A series of chance happenings brought us together.

A training partner mentioned the SBG and Matt Thornton.
Alan and Lily contacted Matt and that led to a Cory Reeves coming
over for seminar. A seminar with Matt soon followed, along with
a trip to an SBG spring camp.

In the meantime Jude was growing toward a completely
alive format with the group he was working with. A seminar with
Rory Singer got Jude hooked, and soon the group he was working with
merged with the old Berkeley gym, forming MODCOM-MMA,
an Affiliated Training Group with SBGi.
