Eric Gushiken
Eric has always had a passing interest in martial
arts but never enrolled in classes for various reasons; either the
cost was too high, or the training too formal, synchronized, and
choreographed, or the excessive emphasis on esoteric spiritualities,
or just plain fear and intimidation.
Prompted by co-workers who were also into martial arts, in 2004
Eric began searching for a martial arts school again. Fortunately,
this time his search led him to Modern Combatives. Although never
having seen UFC style reality fighting or training, when he first
visited the gym and witnessed the training, he instinctively knew
that this was real techniques and training methods that would work
in the real world without all the extraneous stuff that so often
accompanies traditional martial arts gyms. He especially appreciates
the fact that this learning takes place in a fun, supportive, and
controlled environment where the individual is not pressured to
participate in anything they are not comfortable with and is free
to learn and advance at their own pace.
Eric currently has a blue belt in Jiu-Jitsu and has participated
in one submission grappling smoker. While it was a learning experience
for him, Eric desires to continue to train, improve, and test himself
again. Eric is also fortunate to be able to train at B.J. Penn's
Academy when he is home in Hilo, Hawaii on vacations.
